Crime Scene POLL
Hello All!
Last summer we had a game called Crime Scene that let members of this board solve a crime. You were given clues, suspects and more. I'm putting up a poll to see if you would be interested in having another game like this during the summer again. It would be slightly modified so that it's shorter and there would probably be more than one of them. If this interests you answer the poll and let me know!

Re: Crime Scene POLL
You can count me in. I'm not a very good detective, but I can be the one that goes and gets the coffee for everybody!

I take mine with cream, one sugar. Oh, and a bearclaw if you don't mind.
BTW, I'm betting you're a better detective than you give yourself credit for. Most people see more than they realize, they just have to learn how to differentiate between what's important and what's background noise. Me? I'm an analyst, detecive stuff is sort of what I do (but not really). I'll be interested in seeing how I actually do applying it to a real (fictional) case.

THX, as soon as I saw that you'd posted I knew you were leaving me an order! But I had you figured for taking yours straight!
... or, oh, whadyucallit? oxymoron, no ... *sighs* the correct word escapes me.
I'm not sure, but isn't that something like a conundrum? (sp)real (fictional) case

It’s kind of like a Clue Game mixed in with a Bones episode; they give us clues that can be put in different thread so when someone finds it they post in a designated thread and when there are a few clues you can pick the character that you think was the murderer and post in another designated thread and you get one chance to do that. It’s REALLY cool and OF COURSE I am missing a lot of info but I hope you were able to get an idea!!

Actually I normally do drink mine black, but only if I or my father make the coffee. My gf doesn't know how to make coffee properly yet, I use a percolator instead of a drip coffee maker and that freaks her out, and whenever I go out to get some it's either too weak, too strong, or burnt. Cream and sugar hide a multitude of sins.

Yeah, that's the analyst in me. The case would be fictional, the attempt to solve the puzzle would be treated as real, therefore it's a real (fictional) case. Now if it were a real case the police were working on and we were trying to BS our way through "solving" it here on the boards, I'd call it a fictional (real) case, where our efforts were the fiction. It's a shorthand we use for determining resolution priority, you always work within the parens first.

I knew it! And please, a percolator. You are way too refined!!
Thank you for helping me to understand. I didn't know that the Order of Operations applied to the world at large.

Actually I've found that life in general is rooted more in math and physics than anything. If we organize the data, identify the givens, and apply the basic principles of mathematics (or physics, depends on the issue at hand), we'll know what to do and when to do it.
For example, let's say you're working at a waste water processing facility (sewage plant) and you've been under a lot of stress lately because you're boss just asked you to determine the specific gravity of the pretreated sewage prior to it's output to the leech fields. But that's not your problem, your problem is that lately you've been coming home with the worst case of halitosis imaginable and a foul taste in your mouth. We can look at things logically and sort out the data then apply basic mathematical and physics properties to determine the problem.
Facts: You noticed the foul taste and halitosis becoming more and more common just after your boss asked you the specific gravity question. You eat lunch every day at noon. You are allergic to eggs. Your name is Bill. You take your meal breaks outside, next to the plant, at the bottom of a hill that opens out to a verdant field of wild fowers. Now look at it mathematically.
Halitosis+Bad Breath = [(Lunch Outside * (Next To Plant + Verdant Field)) + (Stress * (Specific Gravity Question * (Sewage Plant Job + Nepotism)))] - (Name is Bill, Allergy to Eggs, Lunch at Noon)
So what do we know?
(Sewage Plant Job + Nepotism) = You don't know the first thing about your job
(Specific Gravity Question * (Sewage Plant Job + Nepotism)) = You have no clue how to figure this out and give your boss the answer
(Stress * (Specific Gravity Question * (Sewage Plant Job + Nepotism))) = That has you totally stressed out and scared your going to lose everything.
(Next To Plant + Verdant Field) = You're sitting in the leech field
(Lunch Outside * (Next To Plant + Verdant Field)) = You're eating lunch in a field watered by sewage run-off.
Put them all together and what do we get? It doesn't matter if your name is Bill or your allergic to eggs, or when you eat your lunch. Truth is you're too stupid to realize that shit runs down hill and no matter how nervous you are, don't bite your nails on the job. Hence, halitosis and that nasty flavor in your mouth. QED.
Robert Modean
Point of Clarification, in the word problem the second person personal pronoun "YOU" is being used as an indefinite referrent, and thus applied to no one person but the subjeft of the theoretical construct, Bill.

Re: Crime Scene POLL
If anyone is interested in how the game works, check out the Forensics thread. You can see the game from last year. It looks like there is interest. Maybe I will do it again!
