********************

Reading!
(finding the new stuff)

********************

So, we all come to The ABY to catch up on things, and that FBI emblem shows us the forums with new posts! Very Happy You'll no doubt figure this all out but I thought I'd describe some of those nice little bits that are there to help out!

For a quickie just click that little white shortcut on the right side of the forum page. Hold on a second and hover your cursor over it and you'll get a little pop-up that'll show you the thread it's in. Click it, and voilà, you're there!

---

If you want to be more thorough, clicking the Forum title takes you to the Topic list. It's sorted for you so the topics with the most recent postings are on top. There are a few ways to go from here ... (Notice that I chose my favorite thread to demonstrate with!! drunken bounce sunny )

First off ... glance at the circles on the far left. (For more circle info see the Legend at the bottom of the Topic list.)

indicates there are new posts you haven't seen yet.
means there's nothing new here.

Now that we see what's new, it's time to dig in! There are so many ways to go.

  • Clicking on the topic Title takes you to the first post.
(I would like to take a moment here to put a plug in for one of the HOTTEST threads on The ABY ... that thread is none other than "Hot pic of DB"! Very Happy I love you It's very, very nice!! Oh heck, I'll just give you a tiny little preview right here!!! Hmmm ... decisions, decisions ... scratch how to choose?? *goes back and luxuriates in the entire thread* ... finally inspired!)

I know I speak for the masses when I say "Thank you, Zeddie, for creating this thread for us!" ... way back on that fateful day, Sunday, April 12, 2009 at 11:10 pm (US Central Daylight Time)!

~
~~~
~~~~~~

This is the pic Zeddie chose to grace her premeire post.
(If it was good enough for her then, it's good enough for me now!)

Like a Star @ heaven See, I told you it was nice!! Like a Star @ heaven

~~~~~~
~~~
~

Okay, chop-chop, time to get back to business! (In case you've forgotten, we're going over the different ways to jump into a topic.)

  • pops you into the thread right where your new stuff starts!

  • gives you the option of heading in on a particular page.

  • opens to the most recent posting.

  • sits at the top and bottom of a multi-page thread. Click the page number, or the (<) previous or (>) next arrows.

  • doesn't do anything except tell you that you've posted in the topic!

And just a word more about those circles on the far left ... if the words are scrolling, that means it's a popular thread (25 posts or more).

---

I have just one more little section to add to this subject, and it's what you see top right on the Topic list. They don't technically help you find the new stuff, this time around anyway, but they could help you find stuff in the future.

Mark all topics read - The reason you might want to use this would be if you don't care for a thread or two and you're not interested in reading it, but you want the Forum thread to show that you're finished in there. Go ahead and click it. There's the same command on the Forum thread too, but it marks everything in The ABY as read, so use that one very sparingly, else you're gonna miss something.

Actions! - Be sure to take a look at this; it's some pretty neat stuff. I may tackle it by itself later on.

And below these are the Page numbers, which work just like any of the others. Believe it or not, there's that many pages of Topics for David! Sometimes it's pretty interesting to go look back through some of the older stuff, after all, if you haven't seen it, it's new!!

Quest #4
Bonez pointz: 3

Which episode did this exchange take place in?

Booth: You put a hit out on my partner?
Ortez: She's not FBI.
Booth: I never said anything about FBI. She’s my partner, ese, and if anything happens to her, I will find you and I will kill you. I won’t think twice. Come here, look at my eyes. (He cocks his gun and puts it in Ortez’s mouth.) Look at my face. If anything happens to her, I will kill you. This is between you and me. What nobody sees, nobody knows. You’ve got nothing to prove. You understand? You understand?

In your post be sure to include the Quest #
and place your answer under a spoiler tag.

up next ...

********************

Posting!
(it's time to jump in)

********************

Okay, on to the next experience. Posting! cheers

First off, let me say that there are many members out there, who for some reason unbeknownst to me, have never, ever posted! I see them in the list that they've signed on and looked around (and some quite regularly!) but they never post! What's that all about? To me it's like going to a party and sitting by the wall and just watching the party pass you by. I can understand doing that sometimes, but always? I just want to say to all of you "watchers" out there (or I guess I should call you "readers," ... come on, join in, we don't bite, not very hard anyways. Razz

PM me if you want a list of some that you might want to keep your eye on though!! Laughing

So, let's get this party started, shall we?!

******************

I want to start by pointing out the official ABY references on posting. There's some general information in the FAQ (see menu above). There's also some detailed info in another resource that I just found a couple days ago. It's pretty good but a tad dry, so take a look, you might learn something new. It's the BBCode Guide and you find it from the enhanced posting box toolbar ... it's linked by way of the question mark. (?)

... more to come later!!

Re: The ABY User Manual - don't worry we don't bite!

Post by DBCrazy on Mon Aug 10, 2009 1:07 pm

I'm way behind on this manual. I'm going to have to make myself get back in here and work on it. But there's a little something that I wanted to mention somewhere and this seemed like the place to do it.

I've noticed, but have yet to confirm it, but it seems that at

05:40 UTC (or GMT/Zulu) time "they" reboot TheABY servers. What that means is if you're making some big reply and you hit Send (maybe even Preview) that you've lost it all. I've been burned enough that I've learned to do a Ctrl + A (which highlights the whole reply box) and then a Ctrl + C (which copies the highlighted text to my clipboard)! Be careful though, because you can hit other close key combinations and lose everything too!! Oh how I wish there was a undo button on our Reply box!

Something else I noticed when I'm on here and that reboot happens, I lose all my indicators of what's new!! I think that's as big a drag as losing my post!! Next time I'm going to try logging off about :38 after and getting back on about :42 after, and see if all is well then.

Here's some relevant times around the world that it translates to (daylight saving time) ...

03:10 am Newfoundland

01:40 am Eastern, US
12:40 am Central, US
11:40 pm Mountain, US
10:40 pm Pacific, US

06:40 am London, UK
07:40 am Frankfort, Germany
08:40 am Tallinn, Estonia
03:40 pm Sydney, Australia

Okay now that's information even those of us who've been here a couple of months can use and take to heart! You are the absolute best Sherry! Man that got annoying the way the server would puke on me when I was posting something. Now I know what's going on, coolness.
