Bushfires.

Post by fairytales_end on Sun Feb 08, 2009 1:39 pm

Hey everyone,
The bush fire toll in Australia's up 65 people now. This is with only the last bushfire, which was set by arsonists, put out by volunteer fire fighters and then later restarted.
Although the arsonists may face murder charges, the families that survived have been left with nothing.
I'm not sure if this will work for overseas citizens, but if anyone has some extra money that can be used to help these people rebuild their lives...

Donations can be made to The Salvation Army's Victorian Bushfire Appeal by calling 13 SALVOS (137258) or online to [Only admins are allowed to see this link]

Just watched an update. The fire services can't contain all the fires so the Army's been called in to help. It's terrible. The premier broke down when he was getting interviewed.

Totally devastating... Many of the people I work with have been affected by the Wandong/Kilmore fire. Homes lost and friends who lost their lives trying to leave the area. There aren't any words to describe the feelings. My thoughts and prayers are with them all...

I didn't even hear about this! I hope things get better! It's like the stupid california fires. I always get so nervous it won't get close to Emily's home (since i don't know anyone else in CA, I have to worry about her and the rest of the casts safety)

The latest death toll was 130, but they think it'll get up to 230...
Also, the fires have wiped out 3,000 sq km (1,200 sq miles) of land and destroyed at least 700 homes as far as I've heard....They've arrested one guy over one of the Melbourne fires but who knows if he'll get charged. Last I checked, there were still about 25 fires across Melbourne.

Good news though, the cooler temperature did help a bit, and lots of people are getting involved in fundraising. My school's asked each student to try to bring in $10 tomorrow, so hopefully, if everyone does, we'll raise about $9,000

My thoughts and best wishes are with those affected.
xx

Yeah. I'm lucky, about 50km from the closest fire front and thanks to the southerly winds that blew up on Sunday we were not put on Ember watch, however so many of my friends have lost their houses up around Kilmore/Marysville

The current death toll is at 132 but with CFA and DSE crews just beginning to go into burnt out properties and houses it's expected to double at least.

There is lots of good coverage at the following websites for anyone interested, along with many photos, Audio and Video coverage.
