And besides, the pronunciation isn't right if you spell it with a 'y'...I've never heard a 'y' pronounced as an 'a' sound in any other word.

well, to tell the truth, with a "Y" is sort of how its pronounced around here. not pie-jamas, but not pa-jamas either. it almost sounds like a short "e" sound. pe-jamas.
