I got to wander through some of the outdoor sets (though sorry didn't see any of the actors) from Public Enemies, Johnny Depp's new movie last year.

Re: Little Known Facts....
Yep, they actually filmed some of it right outside the Biograph Theater where Dillenger was shot, and I used to work in that neighborhood. Amazing work--they put very realistic fronts on the stores along Lincoln Ave to match what they looked like then, put something over the street itself that looked like real streetcar tracks (I walked over them--felt real enough, too), even printed up movie posters for whatever movie was showing that night. Antique cars were brought in to line the curb. You could see the florescent tape they used for the actors' marks.
Most of the filming was at night, so during the day, no one stopped us from wandering about or taking pictures. It was amazing--the care that went into it. I mean, the awnings looked weathered, signs were accurate, even to prices, though I imagine there won't be that close a shot of a store window. Only discrepancy was in the newstand--they had the Tribune, and magazines, but some of the dates & headlines were from the 20s!
We did wonder about the cost--they had to pay some of those stores and restaurants to close during filming.
But that was about the time I got S2 of Bones and listened to the commentary from Glowing Bones--the part about the "sushi" Booth was eating, in particular. Both experiences really upped my respect for the props and other background people!

Re: Little Known Facts....
That really does sound cool. Chicago is the big city that I've been to more than any other and I love it there. I know what you mean about the props folks ... if there's money to go crazy with they can do absolutely anything. It's kind of neat that they actually did the sets though, in this day an age of green screen technology!
When I read your first post it made me think of a song I loved when I was a kid. I couldn't remember the name though. Then when I was reading your update "Paper Lace" just popped in my head. That was the band. I'm sure being a native you're all too familiar with "The Night Chicago Died". I just went to YouTube and listened to it. It's not nearly so moving for me now as I remember it was then, but once it gets going it's still pretty good.
Thanks for the details!

'Slacking off' for a school year to me means instead of getting 96-100s (out of 100s) in classes, I get 92s-96s. And one 88.
