Hart Hanson's Keynote Speech

Post by simonmad on Mon Feb 08, 2010 5:06 pm

I may be wrong but I haven't seen it posted anywhere else in the spoiler section.
I did a goof once, so this time I think I checked it well before posting Laughing .

I found it very interesting in many ways, like... "Jack Hodgins" isn't a fictive name at all, or some spoilers about the end of the season.

And for the first time in my life, I wished I was in Edmonton...

I know a lot of people would disagree, but I just adore Hart (as a writer), so thanks for sharing Simon!

EDIT: And this, This is why I love this man:

But I don’t think it adds up to a good novel. It gets awkward discussing this stuff because… for example, I think A Confederacy of Dunces is a stupid-ass book, and a lot of very smart people disagree with me. Also, while I’m being honest: Kerouac. [shrugs]

And the bit about screenwriters in LA. HA! So true!

If I had any sense as a network showrunner, as a mass entertainer, I would at some point in the future refute this brain scan scene, and have our characters realize – probably through an epiphany – that love cannot be quantified, that it is magic, and if I were smart, and a good showrunner, who would get a show to a hundred episodes… I would do that. Soon. Probably before the end of this season.
On the surface that sounds promising......but underneath there is the realization that he might not be smart or a good showrunner......but I think he might have made a promise here.
Any opinions?

That's exactly what I thought when I read it. I like to think positive and to be honest I kind of trust HH, maybe because I'm one of the few who really loved tEitB. As I already pointed out in some other spoiler thread, I believe we'll have the beginning of a B/B relationship on the upcoming wedding (Sweets-Daisy IMO).
April is not that far after all...

It's not just on the surface, toz. Allow me to point something out:

"I were smart, and a good showrunner, who would get a show to a hundred episodes… I would do that. Soon. Probably before the end of this season."

Hehe. That's the thing, see? He did get the show to one hundred episodes. He is that showrunner. The whole speech is about scope and longevity of entertainment writing, and how to walk the fine line between what you want to say (Jesus is a Zombie!) and what you need to say for people to keep watching (Jesus is not a zombie!). And that passage he's saying, "shit, I don't see the problem with love being a chemical reaction in the brain BUT! people do, and I as an entertainer, need to, you know, entertain".

(for the record, that comment about Jesus in the speech? LOL. I'm so with Hart. Totally!)

I saw that too, but I learned not to trust him too much.
He might change his mind and/or he might not have thought about the 100 episode comment at all....

Me too angel
