IMO, HH is writing Brennan off the Shakespearian quote "A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet" as far as her love for Booth goes.

Yes, she loves her parents thus honors them through wearing her mother's ear rings/family ring. She honors Max by telling a story in 'Verdict'. Then again, this can all be accounted for by anthropology where the parents protect their young and the young bond to the parents for this reason.

Brennan does believe in love. She flat out says that it is a chemical reaction in the brain that make people feel euphoria.

But being "in love" with someone is her rose. She's heard stories about this beautiful flower but has never seen it. Her to write stories even in her books or the fairy tale she wrote up in 'The End in the Beginning' is not unusual. She bases this off the tales she's heard about this flower.

Since when they first met, she's had this sweet smell around her that has been growing stronger and stronger. Can she put a name to it? Sure. At first it was "We're partners". It changed to "We're friends". It changed to "Booth is special" during S4.

She has yet to identify it as a rose though everyone else has.
