Chapter 1
And it is my conclusion after almost three years of in depth evaluations that the both of you share an obvious and undeniable emotional connection that most people are never truly fortunate enough to experience. You Agent Booth have come to terms with this fact and are quite effectively masking your feelings on a daily basis. You Dr. Brennan have yet to move past the denial stage and may never due to your emotional deficiencies most likely caused by your traumatic childhood events. In summary, neither of you will be able to function successfully in a romantic relationship with other persons until you come to terms with the dynamics of your current relationship both personal and professional; and decide which direction that you want your current relationship to migrate towards.
The words echoed in her ears. She heard nothing else as the candle flickered on the table, its flame dancing methodically against the glass base. She listened to the words over and over as they cautiously were spoken from Sweets’ lips. Each time she relived the conversation, her mind cogitated the possible meanings behind every adjective, every vowel, and every noun. Do I love him THAT way? If he loves me why did he draw a bigger line today? A piece of wax fell slowly off the side and gracefully slid onto the base, melting and disappearing into the ooze on the base. Without thinking, she slowly reached for the wax, trying to save it from its predestined fate of forever disappearing.
The warm skin of his large hand startled her back into reality. She jumped as he took her delicate fingers and lowered his gaze in an attempt to catch her eyes. “Temperance, isn’t that funny?” The dark haired man asked her as if to assume that she’d heard every word that he had said.
“Yes, uh, yes Andrew. That was very humorous.” Brennan answered with a half-hearted faux laugh.
Hacker took another bite of his dinner and glanced at Brennan with a light-hearted sigh. “Temperance, you seem very distant tonight, distracted if you will. Is everything okay?”
Hacker was a genuinely nice man and was truly concerned. She could sense this when she looked at him. He was a suitable mate for her, a textbook example of what type of man she wanted to commit to. She had rationalized this in her mind a thousand times. “Andrew, I’m sorry, but it’s just been a really long week and I’m very tired.” Brennan immediately felt bad as the hopeful face of this sweet man turned to instantly disappointed as her words shot him down. Feeling the rush of guilt, she recanted without a thought, “But I’m not too tired to dance, maybe it will wake me up. Andrew will you dance with me?” Brennan extended her hand to confirm her invitation. Smiling with a new sense of false hope, Hacker stood and led her to the dance floor.

“Stupid Sweets.” Booth muttered into his beer. He was desperately trying to ignore his feelings as the urge to run to her started to overtake him again and again. Booth knew he was in love with her and had known for quite some time. Slowly over the past several years, he had mastered the art of ignoring his heart when it came to her. He had become quite adept at faking it. Booth had accepted the fact long ago that he would take what he could get when it came to Brennan, because it was better than nothing at all. The missing pieces would have to be filled in by others. He would have to settle for second best in several areas of his life, it was the price he had to pay to keep her in his life at all and he knew it. So if he was right and Sweets was wrong, then why had the conversation after their therapy session been so difficult for him to accept? Why was he wishing he hadn’t said those words to her…
Bones, Sweets has a point. I am pretty sure that I feel differently about you than you do about me when it comes to our relationship. I know that we will never be together as a couple and I will have to deal with that on my own. But for the sake of both our happiness and chance at having successful relationships with other people then I think we shouldn’t hang out together after work anymore. I think that after hours, should be our personal time and we need to separated that from our work time to maintain a healthy partnership. I know you understand..
Before she could answer or even absorb his words, he turned and walked off, leaving her standing there at the Jeffersonian, feeling completely abandoned. Part of him did it on purpose, part of him fled out of fear. Seeley Booth was a proud man, a sensitive man; Seeley Booth had never run from a fight, until now. As he looked at the beautiful woman sitting across the dinner table from him, he knew that he was looking at the wrong doctor and it was killing him.

Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Hacker laughed at his own jokes all night. He talked about his guitar and Brennan did a great job of pretending to pay attention. Hacker felt that she was genuinely warming up to him and he was eating up every moment.
“Temperance, I need to visit the little boy’s room, I’ll be right back.” Hacker kissed her hand as she looked at him questioningly.
Why would he need to visit a room for little boys? Brennan thought. Awe, a Metaphor for the men’s room. Got it.
“Okay, I’ll wait here for you” Brennan watched as her smiling, well dressed date walked away from the table.
Her thoughts wandered to Booth’s words…

But she didn’t understand, she didn’t understand why he purposely damaged their friendship. She didn’t understand why he walked off before she could say anything, she didn’t understand what he meant by him feeling differently than her. Temperance Brennan didn’t understand any of it. What she did understand is that she was physically feeling pain in her stomach when she thought about all of it. Brennan closed her eyes and swallowed water from her glass in an effort to stop the feeling of nausea. When that failed to neutralize the pain, she instinctively reached for her cell phone. She began to text a message to Booth…
I don’t understand what happened today Booth, I need to speak with you. I know it’s after hours but…Brennan stopped typing when she realized what she was doing. She stopped just in time to look up and see Hacker returning to the table. Brennan dropped her phone back into her purse.
“Hey Temperance my dear, what say I pay the check and we go to that new dance club on 5th street everyone’s talking about? You know I can really cut a rug if I want to.” Hacker flashed his most charming smile. His gentle face was inviting and handsome. Brennan smiled back and agreed half heartedly. As she looked into his hopeful eyes, she felt a sense of loss. They were the wrong eyes of the wrong federal agent and she knew it.
