Soulmates. Fluffy K
Just a quick ramble based on the closing scene to The Bones on a Blue Line. Not much, but it's all I got!

“Four...arms? Four heads?” he mocked incredulously.
“Two faces.” Brennan clarified gently.
“Come on!” he scoffed, tilting his head forward with a smirk.
“What? It’s perfectly...get up! I’ll show you.”
A smile flitted across Booth’s face and his eyes became slightly challenging. She let out a quick burst of laughter at his arrogance. Both partners slid off their stools and faced one another. With a quirk of her lips, Brennan indicated with her hand that he should turn around.
“You first. For safety,” he teased.
With a toss of her head Brennan turned her back to him. He allowed himself another quick glance at that robe before following suit.
“Now take a step backwards,” she barked.
Grinning at her bossiness, he obeyed. He felt her head meet the bottom of his neck and the curves of her spine bump gently against his. His jaw clenched briefly.
“Now,” she instructed confidently “two faces...” Here she gently stretched to touch the back of his head and lowered her arm slightly to tap her own.
“Four arms...” she lowered her arm back down to her side and reached backwards, after a slight hesitation, with both hands to gently clasp his forearms.
“And...and four legs...” she finished with a cough, making no attempt to demonstrate this fact to him. He was quite relieved. It wouldn’t have been easy to stay calm if he felt her clasp his thighs.
“So...so that’s it,” she said gruffly, an attempt at authority in her voice as she stepped away from him. With a slight grimace, he sat back down. Brennan followed suit, sipping thoughtfully at her drink.
“Right, so according to Plato, this four-headed thing was a person?” he tentatively broke the silence after a moment a two.
With a tight smile, she nodded.
“Yes, you and I would have been one person. With two faces etc. etc. But we were torn apart. So now we’re separate. One face, etc.”
“Ah. Interesting. So you’re calling us soulmates?” he demanded with a cheeky smirk as he raised his drink to his mouth.
“What? No! I meant...I meant with regard to the demonstration, to my demonstration. According to that, we, a hypothetical soulmate couple, would have been one being but are now two,” she said with an awkward rolling of her shoulders.
“Easy girl,” he muttered gently, setting his glass down with a sigh.
“And now we, the hypothetical soulmate couple, are striving to become one?” he clarified, deciding to let her off the hook.
She nodded at her hands.
“Yes. The theory attempts to explain the deep need we have to connect to that one other person, both emotionally and physically,” she said stiffly, slowly meeting his gaze.
He quirked his eyebrows in a question. She understood.
“The emotional part refers to the seemingly innate desire most people feel to find The One...that person who completes them and makes them safe.”
She swirled the dregs of her drink for a moment before continuing.
“While the physical part is obviously...well, you must have felt that fundamental urge we all get to have sex with another person. To, as you say, become one with someone else,” she finished with a nonchalant shrug.
With an inward sigh he noted how her descriptor had switched from ‘them’ to ‘we’.
“Plato believed that’s what it was all about. We, most people, spend our time trying to find the person who makes us emotionally whole again and then, while we’re with them, we both strive to physically become one.” She ran her fingers through her hair distractedly as she spoke.
“It...it all seems a bit pathetic to me,” she predictably stated with a tiny smile.
He cocked his head slightly and regarded her for a moment before responding.
“It actually makes a lot more sense to me now. I can sorta see where the old guy was coming from. He was actually pretty smart,” he declared, leaning back with a nod to give his statement extra weight.
Brennan rolled her eyes with a snort.
“Well he was Plato! Of course he was pretty smart!”
He grinned at her for a second before leaning forward again and propping his head up on his palm. The room was silent for a full minute.
“You know, Bones, I think you will get it. Someday. I just don’t think you’re allowing yourself to yet. But I have faith,” he finished, with a dramatic flourish of his hand in her direction.
She scoffed quietly but inclined her head. His lips quirked. With a flick of his eyebrows he asked if she wanted a refill. She nodded. He poured out another measure for both.
After a moment, Brennan raised her glass with a short chuckle.
“A toast! To soulmates,” she grinned, though her tone was quite serious by the last word.
Booth nodded, pleased by her choice. He raised his glass and held it against Brennan’s.
“To soulmates,” he echoed, then cleared his throat, “ and to everything working out. Eventually.”

Re: Soulmates. Fluffy K
kiki,
That was pretty good, them laying their bodies like that, one against the other, even if they were standing up and back to back. You could still feel it! And I loved how you threw in the "eventually."
Thanks!
