Living With A Broken Heart
This was meant to be a one shot but I'm playing it by ear basically.
Summary: Not telling him how she felt only pushed him away now Brennan is trying to live with the fact that she may have lost the only man she has loved.
Chapter 1:
LIVING WITH A BROKEN HEART
Ann
“My mind is so muddled, hearts do not break. It isn’t possible.”
They sat quietly watching couples sway silently together on the dance floor. The song was slow and romantic. “You probably don’t want to get out there do you?” her date looked at her. A nervous expression on his face, he tossed back the rest of his champagne and grinned at her. Shaking her head she sipped slowly at what was left in her glass. “You are going to make me take you out there aren’t you?”
“No,” she replied softly, getting to her feet she winced at the pain she was experiencing from the heels. How in the world did Angela talk her into these shoes? “Are you leaving?” Brian looked up from his seat, adjusting his glasses as he asked.
Brennan lifted one leg and pushed back the strap sliding the heels off one by one. “Yes, I’m going home.”
Seeing his chance to finally go home with his girlfriend of three months or so he began to stand. Half way up Brennan placed a hand on his shoulder. “I’m going alone,” she said.
Shoes in one hand her bag under her arm she headed out of the reception hall and into the chilly night air. Honestly she didn’t know how long exactly she was going to be able to stay there. Watching him with his own fiancé she didn’t think she could sit there much longer and plan out the blonde’s demise. It wasn’t a good thing to think about when you have had more than a little bit to drink.
“Temperance,” she heard his heavy footfalls before she actually heard him call her name. She stopped closed her eyes and sighed. “You sure you should drive home?”
“I’m not going to drive home Brian, I’ve called a cab. Now,” she said turning on him. “go back in have fun, I’m going home.”
“You know I didn’t want to do this today, but is there even us?” If she were anyone else she might have felt bad for him but he knew exactly what he was getting into when she met him that night. From the first time she kissed him. Really the only reason she was kissing him was because he was watching. It was not an action that she was use to doing but just seeing him with her infuriated her. It was as if she was doing it before her brain had time to stop her.
From the look on his face she knew she was causing him pain and he was confused, he had every right to be. “I was not going to tell you until tonight, but I cannot continue seeing you Brian. I have no intention for this to go anywhere and I was using you to get to someone,”
His brow creased. “What are you saying Temperance?” He watched her mouth move but his heart was pounding so hard in his ears….he wasn’t sure if he could breath.
“I am going to go okay.” Said Brennan as the cab pulled up. Watching silently Brian didn’t move from the spot he was apparently rooted to until he felt the first few drops of rain hit his skin.
Inside the cab Brennan let her head rest against the cold glass, she couldn’t help that her mind wondered to the couple she watched half the night. Not the bride and groom although Angela looked amazing, but the man she loved and couldn’t tell and the woman he had given his heart to.
The way he held her…..after the third glass of champagne she couldn’t help sway in her seat to the music. Causing Brian to ask her if she wanted to take a walk,
“I’m not drunk,” she told him. He had even tried to take her glass from her claiming she had enough. The look she shot him had him backing off.
It was then she had made her mind up it was time to go, she would call Angela once she got home. She wasn’t feeling well and the champagne was going to cause her to do something that would probably land her in jail. So it was better that she did leave.
So deep in thought, Brennan had not realized that she was at home until the cab came to a slow halt. “13.50,” his voice was scratchy but it pulled her from her quiet thoughts.
“Yeah,” reaching in her purse she pulled out a twenty and handed it to him. “keep the change.” she slid out and waited for a second to get her balance. Everything just seemed to spin, “You alright ma’am?”
Brennan squeezed her eyes shut and took a deep breath of cool air before replying. “I will be fine.”
She would be fine, she would feel so much better when she got to her apartment to her bed and out of this dress. Taking the steps was the worst part she thought until it was time to dig in her purse for her keys. Finally finding them she pushed it into the lock turned the key and pushed the door open. Everything was just as it was when she left it, the jacket she was suppose to have worn to the lab tossed on the couch. Her tea cup from earlier still on the coffee table, the small lamp was still on.
Her apartment had never looked this out of place before, taking her time she made her way to the kitchen. With one hand behind her back she fumbled for the zipper….why was he so stupid? Why was he with her? Didn’t he know how she felt? The questions circled her brain making her dizzy, reaching out she grasped the counter and she still tried to work the zipper. How would he know that she loved him if she never told him? Even though there were things she told him that she never told anyone, but still was hearing it something so different?
The zipper finally began its desend, as soon as it was down she pushed it off and stepped out of it. Leaving it where it was, she stood in front of the refridgerator with the door open, staring at the bottle of water or the beer that was calling out to her.
Shrugging she grabbed the beer then another and went to her room. She had a feeling she was going to pay for this tomorrow. Laying on her back across her bed she decided to try to drink laying down, not difficult but not fun either. She felt the cold liquid trickle down the side of her mouth. “My mind is so muddled, hearts do not break. It isn’t possible.”
