Hart Hanson discusses season 5 controversies.

Interview with HH about Season 5 and the complaints associated with it. I found it very interesting to get the perspective of the writer and what he tried to accomplish and where he may have regrets. Most of the points I agree with, there is one exception about the 100th that I disagree with ( but I'm sure someone else will bring it up)
Anyway check out this section, this is what I found most interesting about the interview

Okay, let’s talk the season finale. I have to say I agree with the fans who didn’t really understand Booth’s reasoning for leaving D.C. Brennan leaving for the dig makes complete and total sense, because it was completely true to her character. But Booth going back to the Army after we were told that he wanted to balance his cosmic balance sheet seems to go against everything we were told about his character.
HH: Here’s the thing, though — maybe I should have made this more clear [in the episode] — he did not go back to shoot people. He didn’t go back to be a sniper and shoot people. He went back to train people: how to catch insurgents, how to do police work.

Yeah, that wasn’t clear enough in the episode.
HH: I know, that’s a problem. He went back to show people how to be cops in a country where there were no cops. So yeah, I heard that, people saying, he never would have done that, go back and be a sniper. I agree. He would never go back and be a sniper. He would never do that again

Just a pre-emptive heads up, please remember this is the show forum, the article does not contain any spoilers, so the responses to this should be spoiler free. Smile

"Yeah, that wasn’t clear enough in the episode."

Really? I got it? I Not as though it was explained in great detail but I know I still understand that he was only going back to train people. It was mentioned several times, was it not?

Yeah, I thought it was clear too. But I have heard a lot of complaints about Booth going back to fight again, so maybe it wasn't. Or else Hart misunderstood their compliants. I think people were upset he went back to a war zone regardless of the reason he went.

I don't know about anyone else, but I assumed he was going back to train snipers. which is where I think HH wasn't clear enough, in that he wasn't going to train snipers he was going to train police officers.

He told Caroline he was going to be "training soldiers to investigate, pursue and detain". I think what got everyone confused was that it was a Full Bird Colonel in the Rangers who came to talk to him and people just made that leap that he was going to be doing the same thing as before. Or training guys to do what he did before...

You know now that I think about it, I'm not sure what I thought he was going to do. Lol. I just remember thinking he wasn't going to be in danger persay, not on the front lines or whatever.

What does everyone think of Hart Hanson's quote on Internet fans?

But some people are pissed off. At what point is getting that angry reaction doing more damage than good?

HH: Here’s the other thing that’s really hard to remember: the internet people are not the voice of the 10 million fans of BONES. They are a very small, vocal, passionate, fanatics. So they have reactions that don’t match the reactions of just the “normal” TV viewer. And unfortunately, I can’t be swayed by the people who love — and hate — the show most. We get a lot of input that isn’t from the internet. We have market research and the marketing people, the promos people. So I have to not listen to the [internet] people, just because they shout the loudest.

I hate to say it but he's probably right. I have several friends that watch the show that have never heard of or care to be on any Bones Blog. They are fans, just not rabid like me. They blindly watch it and accept it without a lot of question, which I assume is probably most of his audience. We have watched it together couple of times, which has been frustrating for me, they get up walk away, turn the channel sometimes.
If most fans are like my friends they may not even care if B&B ever get together.
Unfortunately, I think we are a smaller group than what we hope. But of course, time and the ratings for S6 will tell the real tale.

It was clear, but it was just one line and some people could have missed it. But I still think a clearer way would have been to send him to Afganistan to do the same training as the FBI Agent he is. There was no need for him to go back into the Army, there a a lot of civilian police personnel there already for just such training.

I dunno... maybe I'm way off here, but I see the online community as a concentrated, vocal, and emotional representation of the entire fanbase. I hear the same complaints/praise from friends who watch the show regularly, but don't care if they miss and watch something else if they don't like the particular episode as I do from people online. (With the notable exception of spoilers... I guess online fans do differ in that they will complain about things that have yet to unfold. And I don't mean this as a criticism, because I definitely have and do that.) The difference is those who don't like something and who are more apathetic about it just turn the show off, rather than get online and complain about it. Maybe I'm missing something, but when I hear the same complaints (and praise) I don't really see how one section of the fanbase is any different from the rest of it if they're just more in-your-face about it.
