More than Coffee; or Blame the Mistletoe

Disclaimer: I own nothing
Possibly spoilery... though if you get the mistletoe reference in the title, then you already know why.
I've been lurking for awhile here, thought I'd join up and post something, so here goes...
They were headed somewhere, and it was perhaps the first time she could admit that to herself. For most of their working relationship she'd been able to pass those odd, but endearing moments, those lingering looks and slight brushes off, but as of late it was becoming increasingly difficult.
Perhaps more surprising to her was not that they were harder to ignore, but that she found herself wondering if she should ignore them. Especially when he didn't seem interested in hiding his feelings. When their conversations turned to things like, making love and the evolution of a person... or a relationship.
Logically it was probably the worst time for something like this to happen. Things were finally good between them again. For so long it had felt like they were missing something, flying by each other in the middle of the night and forgetting how to work together. They'd been off. But now, things were back to normal, back to the two of them saving lives and catching the bad guys. That standard black and white, that was so comforting. They clicked, they were the center and everything was falling back into place, back in time, in beat. The dance once more flawless, now that the stumbling blocks were removed.
Feelings were going to screw that to hell. She'd be the first to admit that she was incredibly talented at messing up relationships. Most of the time it was because she couldn't be invested enough, or because in her typical fashion, she chose the wrong guy. And despite what they wanted you to believe, most guys didn't want their girls to regard sex as a biological function necessary only for it's stress relieving and endorphin releasing properties. It freaked them out, and if it didn't... it lasted for a little bit, but one or both parties lost interest when the novelty wore off.
And despite her talk, she did want a little more intimacy than a casual hookup. Did want a little more commitment than that. Which only made the whole thing a hell of a lot more confusing.
Nothing about relationships was black and white, which was one of the reasons they made her so uncomfortable. When there was no right answer how could you possibly get it right.
She wanted to blame the whole mess on their therapy sessions. The whole thing seemed so pointless at first, and then they'd started to help fix problems that she hadn't even known existed. But now, Booth was closer than ever and things were starting to get out of hand.
There was a line, a line she was starting to believe they needed more than ever, and he seemed intent on keeping one foot on either side of it.
And she...
She kept finding herself wanting to drag him the rest of the way over.
Damn him.
He knew how it would turn out, so did she, that's why the damned line was there in the first place. He was her friend, one of the best she'd ever had, she could tell him almost anything. This, was going to ruin that.
And though it scared her senseless, she played right along. Leaned forward and held his gaze those few extra seconds. Whispered with him, touched him too often. She couldn't blame him entirely for testing that line when she gave him a damned invitation to.
Their relationship was a hell of a lot more than coffee.
Her lips quirked in amusement. He'd add that it was about Thai food too.
About quiet nights at the diner, and arguing over cases. Watching each other's back, knowing that there was always someone she could count on. Always someone to challenge her, test her, make her step outside.
And she loved that about him. Loved that he refused to give up and walk away like so many others before him.
But this was going to ruin it all.
It didn't matter how many times she told herself it wasn't, that it meant nothing, society obligated them.
She knew it. The moment his lips left hers, she knew it.
So she'd blame the mistletoe.

I love it! I didn't expect that she was thinking it under the mistletoe, well written!

This was very well written. I love reading about Brennan's thoughts especially when they are true to her character and reveal her thoughts on their logical build-up.
Best line for me: There was a line, a line she was starting to believe they needed more than ever, and he seemed intent on keeping one foot on either side of it.
And she...
She kept finding herself wanting to drag him the rest of the way over.

That was very insightful. Brennan must have had a flashback under the mistletoe. Thinking so fast ;-).
And you had a perfect timing with the mistletoe coming tomorrow. You know we can hardly stand the anticipation.
So I wish you a very warm welcome here at our lovely Community of Bones Addicts!

Well thank you all for your kind feedback. Initially it was meant as more of a reflection to her moments under the mistletoe but thinking it under the mistletoe works too.
I was hesitant to write Brennan at all, which is why this is the first Bones fic I've done. That and I'm tied up writing a massively long fic for another fandom. As for if I'll continue this or not, probably not. Though I am toying with the idea of doing a Booth piece for it, we'll just have to see how things go.
Thanks once again for the warm welcome and I'm glad you've all enjoyed this.

Oh wow, I am IN LOVE with your writing! I love your style and this story was just TOO cute! Adorable! And, I'm with jersey. That 'dragging him over the line' part was PER-fect!

Okay, WOW, that was really awesome! Welcome to the ABY--I hope you'll come back often. Anyway, very well written, you are a master at conveying a whole lot of emotion with a minimum of words. I can tell you've done this before, lol. So you absolutely should write a part 2 with Booth's thoughts and feelings, and THEN maybe a part 3 showing the aftermath of the kiss. I loved it!
