Chapter 16

The picture was of Bren lying on the ground with what looked like whip marks that had torn through her clothes. But what made the picture even worse were the hatred, fear and pain in her eyes.

“Oh god” Ange said before running out of the room.

“I can’t believe this” Hodgins said before following Ange to see if she was ok.

Zack just stood there and stared at the picture.

Booth swore and slammed his fist into the wall.

“Agent Booth?” Zack asked.

“What?” Booth said shortly.

“Um. Well I just had an idea of how we can try to locate Dr.
Brennen.” Zack said not looking at Booth.

This immediately sparked booth’s interest and he decided that Zack might be good for something. “Well are you going to tell me this idea?” Booth asked impatiently.

“Oh. Well I was thinking that we should find the social worker that was in charge of Dr. Brennen when she was under Mr. Samuels care. See if they know anything about where he might be holding Dr. Brennen.” Zack said hurriedly.

“Alright that sounds good. I will- wait a second. How did you know that Bones was with Mr. Samuels and that he has kidnapped her?” Booth asked accusingly.

“Well, you have been spending a lot of time talking to Dr. Brennen in her office with the door shut, you talked to one of her doctors, her friend showing up, and of course the fact that I read the hospital report. It is only natural that she would have a social worker and that Mr. Samuels is the one who kidnapped her.” Zack answered like it was common sense.

“That’s good enough reasoning for me. I will go and track this Mary down.” Booth said as he started to leave Bren’s office.

“Um Agent Booth?” Zack asked confused.

“What now?” Booth said very annoyed.

“Who is Mary? And how will she help us with the case?” Zack wondered.

Booth groaned at Zack’s ever-obvious questions. “It was her social worker Zack, and you know how it will help our case” Booth answered.

--Wherever Bren was being held—

*Well at least he is gone now. I wonder what he is going to do with the picture though* Bren thought, she gasped when she realized what he is going to do with the picture. *He is going to give it to Booth. Then everyone will see me like this. They will see my weakness, what will happen to them when they see me like this? * She never got the chance to answer her own question before the door opened again.

--At Mary’s office—

Booth walked into the office that he was told belonged to Mary. *Thank god for badges that let me get anywhere. * He thought.

“Hello can I help you?” An older lady asked Booth as soon as he stood in her open doorway.

“Well are you Mary?” Booth asked.

“Yes I am. After all this is my office” Mary replied wondering where this was going.

“I just had to make sure ma’am. My name is Seeley Booth, I came here to ask you a few questions” Booth said, hoping that this lady would cooperate without him having to use his badge since Bones was always telling him not to just shove his badge in everyone’s face.

“Well its nice to meet you. If the questions are about an immediate relative then I can answer some questions but if not then I am afraid I can not help you,” Mary said annoyed.

Booth sighed before taking out his badge. “This is not about immediate relative but she is family. Her name is Temperance Brennen and she is my partner and just to let you know my full title is its Special Agent Seeley Booth. Now about those questions” Booth said somewhat smugly at the fact that Mary would have to answer his questions now.

“Well I think I can answer some questions Agent Booth. Now did I hear you say Temperance Brennen?” Mary asked hoping that he didn’t say her.

“Yes I did” booth replied.

Mary closed her eyes and took a deep breath before opening them. “Alright well what can I help you with?” She asked as Booth sat down.

“Let’s start with the beginning shall we? So you were Bon-I mean Temperance’s social worker, right?” Booth asked almost calling Bren Bones to Mary.

“I wasn’t always her social worker. They assigned me to her case right before I put her in Alex Samuels house. She went through a lot of social workers because no one would be able to stay with her.” Mary started, when she saw booth’s confused look she continued. “Temperance was what you would call one of the impossible cases. Most kids who were bad would usually attack, curse, play tricks, or just out right ignore their social workers. Not Temperance, she had this burning fire in her eyes. If I would say something to her she would just shoot something back, if I didn’t say anything then she would sit there and just give me this look. I swear I had never seen that look before; it would pierce right through your heart. I often wondered why she turned out the way she did. In the first year that she was in the system she was bounced from home to home, I believe that it was 10 homes that first year. That of course was before I met her. When I got assigned to her I thought that it might do some good to be placed with a man, you know like a fatherly figure” Mary told Booth.

Booth snorted when she said fatherly figure. “A fatherly figure? I do not think that he was the type of father that anyone would want. Aren’t social workers supposed to check up on the children in their care? Just to make sure that they are ok?” Booth asked.

“Yes, we are. And before you get any ideas I did check up on her, exactly when I was supposed to. I have to reports to prove it.” Mary answered.

“Well then how come you didn’t notice that anything was wrong?” Booth asked wondering if this lady was working with Samuels.

“I guess you saw the hospital reports then? That is why you are questioning me all of a sudden” Mary sighed.

“Well I did just see the hospital reports. But the reason I came down is because she is missing, well she was kidnapped by Samuels” Booth said a little harshly.

“Kidnapped? Why?” Mary asked wondering why Samuels would kidnap Temperance.

“Well she and her team were investigating a murder and she came to the conclusion that it was Samuels because the girl had all of the same lacerations and rape marks. Samuels did not want to truth to come out I guess” Booth said sadly.

“Did you say her team? What team would Temperance have?” Mary asked.

“Well even though I don’t think that you have any right to know I will tell you. She is the head forensic anthropologist at the Jeffersonian and her team consists of a bug and slime guy, another forensic anthropologist, and a forensic artist. Oh and I guess you could say me too” Booth informed Mary.

“Wow, she became a forensic anthropologist. I can’t believe it, well I guess that she was always dedicated but I never really thought that she was in school. I would always get complaints from her foster parents that she was out all night, sometimes coming home at 3 in the morning and leaving at 6 to go to school, and that she never did any of her work.” Mary said in awe.

“Well she is the most brilliant person I know, and if you met her now you would think so too. But back to the reason that I came here for. Do you know of any place that Samuels would be hiding Temperance in?” Booth asked.

“Let me go and check for a minute” Mary said as she got an idea. “I think I might know a place.”

“Alright just please hurry.” Booth said.

--Wherever Bren was—

“Tempe I hope that you have come to your senses. I don’t want to have to use any more of my goodies on you” Alex snickered.

“I never lost my senses. I was just telling you the truth, after all you were the one who asked me if I remembered Robby.” Bren said not wanting to give in but hoping that she wouldn’t get herself into any more trouble.

“Well let’s see if you still think that Robby is better then me now” Alex said while getting on top of Bren.

--At Mary’s office—

“Agent Booth, I think that I have found something,” Mary said as she was coming back into her office.

“Really? How can you be sure?” Booth asked not wanting to get him hopes up.

“Well before Temperance’s case I was pretty close to Alex. He once told me about his step dad’s house that was left to him. I got him to say a little more about it but I know where it is. He said that no one knew about it and that it was a half hour away from his house. When I looked further into that I found out that it was on 56 Lexington drive.” Mary said.

Booth nodded and took out his cell phone. “Ange? I think I found Bones. I’m not one hundred percent positive but I am going to go check it out, tell the rest of the squints.” Booth said into his cell phone before hanging up. “Thank you Mary” Booth said as he got up.

“Agent Booth?” Mary asked. “After she gets better do you think that you could come back and talk a little about her or bring her in to talk to me? There are a lot of unsaid things between us,” Mary said.

“I will try” Booth said as he ran out, dialing someone else on his cell phone.

“Hello Cullen?”

“It’s Agent Booth”

“I think I found Dr. Brennen”

“Yes I am almost 100% positive.”

“Thank you sir. It’s on 56 Lexington drive, a half-hour away from where the body was found. I’m on my way there now,” Booth said before hanging up and jumping into his SUV turning the sirens on.

*Hang on Bones. I’m coming. *
