Hello Everyone and Welcome to Inkslinger! This is a place where both I and Ana will be each posting a review of all of the season three episodes. And we will battle it out!!! There will be diverging opinions but hopefully we will provide two good, solid reviews of each of the episodes.
Feel free to comment about who you agree with!
Well, we have started with the Season Two DVDS, so here's my review!
THE SHOW
The second season of Bones starts off with a bang, with a new boss in town who has a past with Booth and who creates a stressful working environment.
Each episode gets better and better, culminating into what I like to call the trifecta of episodes. They are, Aliens in a Spaceship, Headless Witch in the Woods and Judas on a Pole. Headless is the weakest of the three obviously, but still quite good.
Aliens is fantastic for several reasons, but my top reason is TJ Thyne. The acting that he does in that is astounding, every time I see him say he’s head over heels in love with Angela, it tears my heart out! That should have been an Emmy nod for sure. I liked Booth in this one too; that moment where he’s with the squints and he smacks the monitor, really good. And Zach’s ‘dirt and Angela’ line is sweet.
The first time I watched Judas on a Pole however, I wasn’t quite sure. By the second viewing, I think I loved it. David Duchovny was a great director, there was definitely a style; more edgy I think. Where I was first hesitant about Ryan O’Neal as Max, I’ve grown to like him, not only in this ep but in the others. I want season three to focus on Booth’s family only because I feel the Brennan storyline can get too much sometimes.
Plus, it had the almost kiss!
I loved bits and pieces of all the other episodes; Jack leaning against the alligator in Girl in the Gator, anything Gordon Gordon related, the mac and cheese moment in Glowing Bones, there are so many great moments. The Woman in the Sand stuff, the crazy ants in Bodies in a Book, ahhh…..the memories!
There were so many new elements to this season which I liked. And new shockers too, primarily Cam and Sully. I didn’t like Cam at first, but not because she was with Booth but rather because she was pushing the team around. I also liked Sully because I thought he opened up the character of Brennan a lot.
My least favourite episode was the finale. It didn’t gel to me as much as the others and felt a bit rushed. I did love the Booth and Max scenes but I felt the ‘Brennan watching the video of her mom’ scene contrived. I don’t know why, it just didn’t work for me.
I feel this season, Emily Deschanel really brought Brennan out and expanded her character. The chemistry between her and David Boreanaz is smokin’ hot! We all know that! I love the little looks they give each other and the witty banter and…..sigh!
But as well this season the others stepped up, most notably TJ Thyne, Patricia Belcher (love Caroline!) and guest star Stephen Fry, who’s Gordon, Gordon was a work of pure genius!
THE EXTRAS
On to the DVD! The packaging was much better (remember how DB’s head looked weird in the first one) however someone just pointed out that they spelt Seeley wrong!
The first special feature they have is The Memories in the Season. I found this to be fairly interesting. It’s always neat to me to hear what actors think about their own show. I loved how TJ talked about the Jack/Cam friendship and how Tamara was just glad that she wasn’t killed off.
The cutest moment was when David said his favourite scenes were the ones with Emily. Awwww! And everyone pretty much agreed that the Truth in the Lye was the grossest.
Ryan O’Neal was pretty funny in the commentary as well. I thought it was just short enough too be perfect. It could have been dragged out!
The next special feature was Visceral Effects: The Digital Illusions of Bones. This was more interesting than I thought it would be. How they put together the effects for things like the Vomit Comit were extraordinary. Watching it made me realize how seamless the CG is on the show. I never know its there. The best interesting fact was for the ant sequence in Bodies in a Book; apparently the guy created over 100,000 digital ants!
On to the gag reel! It was pretty much hilarious! And my favourite of all the special features. David Boreanaz is hysterical (curses A LOT!) Emily seems to mess up her lines a lot, and they all seem like they are having fun. Enjoyed it all!
The deleted scenes were interesting too. In some cases you could totally see why they were deleted. I didn’t watch it with the commentary though which leads me to my confession.
Confession time!
I didn’t watch both of the commentaries. I watched the one with Emily, her dad Caleb and Stephan Nathan. It was interesting. I found Emily to be really funny, my favourite part was when she said that instead of learning about directing and cinematography from her dad, she decided just to boss him around on set! She seems really down to earth and some interesting facts were thrown out but it wasn’t like the season one commentary. I think that just goes to show what great chemistry DB and ED have!
All in all, I think this season was fantastic. The combination of fantastic writing along with a brilliant cast is why this show is great. I hope against hope that it has many years ahead of it!
And that’s my review!

I look forward to the discussions that these reviews generate. Differing opinions...yes, but as Wills said, I think this gives us the opportunity to see things from different perspectives, which is always a good thing!. And now...here is my humble opinion of the S2 Special Features...
Seeing as the Season 1 DVD set is where my obsession with Bones began, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the second season to appear. To see the episodes that I love whenever I want, and to have a peek behind the scenes with the special features…ah, heaven on six little round discs. And I thought lucky me…because I had both the special features from the box set, plus the bonus disc from Best Buy.
I do have to commend the producers (or whoever decided what went where) on improving over the SF that were provided with S1. Between the two discs, there is a LOT of material to watch. Two commentaries, two blooper/gag reels, deleted scenes, and three ‘featurettes’. They really made an effort to give the fans more footage, information, background, etc…
However, it must be said, that quantity does not always equal quality. With a few notable exceptions, I found a lot of the SF….dull. Throughout much of them, I could not wait to get back to watching the episodes.
I was disappointed that neither of the commentaries (Stargazer and Glowing Bones) included interaction between the actors, especially considering how character driven the series is. Remember the ED/DB commentary from Two Bodies in the Lab? That is one that I actually replay from time to time while I am sitting over the notebook. These, having listened once to each, will most likely not be replayed at all. In the Stargazer commentary with the three producers/writers, there are some interesting tidbits about the actors and the background of the storyline, but in the long run…nothing memorable. In fact, there are some slightly annoying convos that don’t seem to end, such as the one about the use of green screens in the church scenes (church…not the church…church, enough fellas!) that almost had me reaching for the remote. There is also too much play-by-play for my taste. I would rather just watch the episode!
The commentary for Glowing Bones was better, primarily due to the fact that it included one of the actors! In this one, ED, her father and Stephen Nathan provide the behind-the- curtain look-see. I was curious to see the interaction between ED and Caleb Deschanel, and was rewarded with a pretty lively conversation. The biggest payoff for listening to this commentary though, is that ED’s personality and sense of humor really shines through. But again, in the end…a nice way to get some tidbits, but my attention kept wandering.
And on to the featurettes…
The biggest issue that I had with these, was that the actors seemed to have been interviewed separately, the footage cut and spread between the various featurettes. There is no interaction, except for a split screen number between Michaela and TJ. And it feels like there is a lot here that we have heard before.
Visceral Effects: The Digital Illusions…would be of value to those interested in the technical side of film/television. Given that, I am probably not the best judge of this one. They discussed the ride on the “vomit comet” from Spaceman in the Crater and the ant sequence from Bodies in the Book…but that was as far as I got…because I did reach for the remote! Just not my cuppa tea…
Looking Forward to Season 3 (on the Best Buy disc)…not much in here that the avid fan has not already heard, and in the end you would get more information from the spoiler sections of the fan sites. The best part though, is that we get a chance to see what the actors want from their characters. Three minutes…so not too bad..
The Memories in the Season probably had the best production value. The content…well. Actors favorite moments are a nice way to get some insight. But it felt…predictable? Good for the first few minutes, but in the end too long.
Fleshing Out the Bones (Best Buy Disc) This one was probably the one that grabbed my attention the most, primarily as a writer. The focus is on the crafting of the stories, which is something that I find endlessly fascinating. But it clocks in at 30 minutes, and with a lot of background that we already know from S1 features, this one may feel a little ‘draggy’ to some.
Deleted Scenes.. I am including this here, because my impression is the same as the featurettes. They have provided 9 scenes, with commentary optional. With the exception of one scene that carries on the guy-but not a guy banter from Headless Witch, I think that the correct decision was made to remove these. I do like to see ‘what might have been’, but having done so…I’m much happier with ‘what was’.
And here it is…saving the best for last. The gag reels!
In my opinion, these were the best parts of the special features, though not for the reason you might think. First, let it be said that they really went all out to include a lot of footage, well-paced, with some great shots, and an intro with a skeleton jammin’ to the theme song that perfectly fits with the spirit of the show. Lots of line flubbing, of course, and one hell of a lot of bleeping (which I find ironic at the moment!) The funnier portions are when they are ‘improvising’ and goofing around rather than screwing up their lines. Some truly hilarious stuff. This is one that I would actually watch again, just for the great shots of DB and ED’s facial expressions. Some of them are priceless!
And the kiss! The ‘squee’ heard ‘round the world I am sure. At first, I was literally jumping up and down in front of my television. But later…later, there was a teeny-tiny part of me that regretted seeing it. Bear with me here. The truth is, there is only one first time. In a way, this was our first time seeing a visual the Booth/Brennan kiss…outside of our rampant imaginations, that is!. It wasn’t part of a story line, we didn’t have that delicious tension build up that we all love/hate. I know, I know…I sound like a kid that got her cake and then wasn’t happy with it, but I can’t help it. But will I still be jumping up and down in front of the television when it happens on the show? You betcha!
So, in the end? The special features are good for a quick look…but have the remote at the ready! I am already much happier now that I back watching the episodes!

Ohhhh.. I am soo so sooo glad you put this thread up, I love it already
Like the fact that you have different POVs about the discs and really looking forward to getting mine (sometime towards the end of October…sighhh...Scotland feels like the end of the world at the moment LOL).
I soo want to sea S2 again, in all its colour and sound and image perfect glory!!! Looking forward to the features as well ….i am just a bit disappointed that we didn’t get more varied commentaries on the eps. It is nice to hear from the producers, but honestly, although I am grateful to them for discovering and creating the show, I am mainly hooked on the scrïpt and the actors so these are the two components which interest me more. I wish TJ and Michaela would have done a commentary on one of the eps (the fishy proposal would have been great!) and I miss the DB ED commentary! The off the screen combined with the on the screen interaction of the two was better than a double portion of chocolate last time. And I wish Steven Fry would have gotten a chance to say his piece about the show. And TJ should have gotten a chance to comment Aliens in a Spaceship, because he was absolutely brilliant in it! By the way why can’t they get the whole cast to comment on one ep? This and a couple of others where the action was more balanced between all characters would have been ideal for that. Let the actors comments on their scenes or on their colleagues scene, in a reverse review kind of thing. I would really enjoy that!
Ok, I admit, the tiny nerd in me also wants to know about some of the special effects ;-)) And I hope in Nathan’s commentary we get some insight as to where they get their inspiration for the cases and for the dialogue. It one of the DVDs reviews I have read it was pointed out that the show is unusually rich in dialogue. And I felt that was absolutely correct and what makes the show to feel so fast paced. I usually rewind bits to follow the dialogue again, that is how much I like it. So yes, I would really love to know more about how that comes to live… don’t know whether the DVD will answer that question.
Wills, I have to soo agree with you about Judas on a Pole. DD did a great job! It was edgy and thrilling and gave us the perfect dual feeling about Max: good guy or killer? I think they picked the perfect director to embed that duality in our minds the strongest way possible. I don’t think I ‘ll ever be able to forget the image of the body on the pole at the end...shudders. I hope they’ll keep getting different people to direct episodes because it keeps it fresh and adds some interesting POVs to the characters and the show.
That’s all from me...without having seen the DVDs yet!! LOL :-p

Season Three as seen through ya'lls eyes.
Loved every second of Season Two DVD set.
Highlights for me were the smooch I didn't think it was a "kiss"
as we B/B fans mean kiss, the view of TJ in his white box
briefs and MCs reaction, the way DB can weave profanity into
an art form before they cut it, he does it so effortlessly,
getting to know TT a little, and last but not least my
realization that the cast has really grown up and grown closer
together.
Has anyone else noticed that TF never seems to mention DB?
I took Producers comments about DB to mean that he could
get what ever he wanted from them.Course now he "am one".
But other than ED comments not much was said of DB other
then he was the leading man.

Here we go! The Inkslinger showdown for the Widow's Son in the Windshield! I'm excited and very curious to see what Ana posted. And what did you think about the episode? And who do you agree with? Me or Ana? Or both?
Here's mine:
So I eagerly anticipated the season premiere of Bones and in many ways it didn’t disappoint. From the opening sequence, where a skull landed in the windshield of a car, I was intrigued by the case and delighted at the sight of our favourite characters. The rest of the episode followed and while it was good, it wasn't neccesarily the best.
The Characters/The Relationships
This episode seemed to be all about setting up certain moments between characters that would impact the rest of the season. From the beginning, we see Angela and Jack talking to a private investigator about Angela’s mysterious husband from her Fiji wedding. TJ Thyne’s facial expressions throughout most of these interactions are hilarious. One of my favourite parts is when he starts getting jealous of Angela’s husband. ‘His hands are the size of shovels!’ That part made me laugh out loud. The Hodgela love was still there and it wasn’t overdone as it sometimes was last season.
Speaking of Angela, there were some great Angela/Brennan moments in this show which I feel had been missing of late. But by far, the best Angela moment of the show is when she was working with Booth. That was a pleasant surprise and I loved every minute of it. When Booth is interrogating that suspect and he’s listening to Angela through the earpiece, it just reinforced how much their characters are alike. I think it also showed that Angela was capable of more than just being in the lab. I would love to see that again.
Another surprise was the Booth/Cam interaction. This, I think was one of my favourite parts in the show. From the beginning, when they were having a drink together to the part where Cam helps convince Brennan to go out in the field with Booth, you could just tell that they were, despite their relationship, good friends. I like this a lot because you never get to see Booth have friends except perhaps for Sully. Oh, and there was a nice Booth/Hodgins moment as well.
I loved Clark Edison, the person who was supposed to be Zach’s replacement. He was adorable and when he left at the end, I almost wanted him to stay!
Which brings me to Zach. Zach has never been my favourite character, I find him very bland and one-dimensional. For me, this episode worked towards changing that. From the moment Zach steps back into the Jeffersonian, you can tell something is a little off and by the time you see him sleeping on a exam table, you start to worry. But its this line that hits you in the heart: “The Army psychiatrist said I should examine why the Jeffersonian is the only place I fit in.”
This wanted me to take back all the things I ever said about Zach. Eric Millegan did an excellent job showing Zach’s need to have everything return to normal. I can’t wait to see this play out in the coming weeks.
And finally, on to Booth and Brennan. From the beginning, they are uncomfortable with each other and the reason is unclear. Booth turns whiny as he asks why Brennan doesn’t want to be his partner anymore and Brennan hides behind her usual logic. What I like the most about David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel is how they use their movements to show how their character’s are feeling. It just adds something extra I feel. Booth thinks Brennan’s mad at him because of her father’s arrest, in fact its completely different. The reason instead is that she doesn’t like that Booth didn’t stop Zach from going to Iraq.
That’s when you see the ‘team as family’ moment shine through. She’s like the big sister wanting to protect him.
Once they have made up, there’s a moment at the end of the episode which is definitely a tease for those who want Booth and Brennan together. I was distracted by the god awful green screening (more on that later) but my favourite line was Booth’s: “You and me, we’re the centre.” It was a sweet moment to end the show on.
The Case
The case was interesting but disjointed I felt. The original suspects ( the wife of the Deputy Director of the Secret Service) were quickly discarded at the beginning and the focus shifted to a man who was a cannibal. That actor was very good, a cringe worthy part was when he said babies tasted like fish. However it turns out that someone else is involved and before they can question the cannibal, he turns up dead.
There’s some good moments where Hodgins’ gets to flout his conspiracy theories in an effort to solve the case. As well, Zach picks up on something that Brennan did not, a sign that he really is her equal now.
The silver skeleton idea is interesting (basically the serial killer is replacing the silver skeleton bones with real ones) but now that its at the Jeffersonian, what will the serial killer do? It will be interesting to see how the case progresses I’m just not totally hooked yet.
Highlights
One of the highlights for me in this episode was TJ Thyne. I just thought he stood out in terms of acting ability. As well, I loved seeing Caroline return and I hope she will be in it quite a bit. She can take one or two lines and steal the whole scene!
Another highlight was the opening credits. Although mostly the same, they did add that shot of Booth running down the hill. Yummy!
Overall Impressions
I thought it was a good, well rounded episode. There wasn’t anything spectacular but at the same time it wasn’t horrible. It was just great. It was a good start to what will be an excellent season, I’m sure.
A few quibbles however. At certain points, it felt like the sound was messed up, once I could barely hear Zach. And the green screen was horrible. In fact it took away from that whole moment at the end for me. I need to watch it again so I can focus on the dialogue instead of Booth’s head, which looked like a cut out.
What gave this episode its best moments was not the case, but the character relationships. I really feel like you got to see different sides to some of the characters that hadn’t been portrayed on the show before. This is what made the episode totally worth it. I liked it, I recommend it, however the tech stuff was distracting.
I give it:

And, my take on Widow's Son in the Windshield...
Introduction
Mm-hmmm. Edge of my seat. TV tuned to Fox an hour in advance just to make sure I wouldn’t miss a thing. Practically holding my breath at 7:59. So, after months and months of impatiently waiting and wondering….was it worth it? Oh, yeah…..
Characters/Relationships
Relationships. Characters. The absolute core of Bones. And this episode absolutely did not disappoint in that regard, covering lots of ground, and setting up some tantalizing story lines for the season.
Caroline is back! That is all I can say on that. I love that woman’s style!
Cam. Yes, there was a point when I hated seeing her linked with Booth. She’s grown on me over time though, and in this episode I saw an interesting dynamic between the two of them. She has the potential to be Booth’s ‘Angela’, a confidante, someone that knows him well, as she says, that can provide an interesting avenue into Booth’s perspective.
Zach came back from Iraq, and it felt like seeing a kid brother all grown up. He seems to have gained some secrets, not to mention a layer of maturity during his time away that wasn’t there before. He has had his doctorate for awhile, but now is when he no longer comes across as the kid-assistant-grad student but a full-blown forensic anthropologist, with the know-how to find things that even Brennan missed. He’s never been quite two-dimensional, but there is added depth to Zach that will be interesting to see play out over the season. And it has to be said that the presence of the eager-beaver potential replacement, Clark, made me appreciate our Zacharoni all the more. Not that he was terrible… he just wasn’t Zach.
Ah, and then Angela and Hodgins, caught in limbo with the long forgotten, and I mean really forgotten first husband. They are putting on brave faces, spinning it as positively as they can, apologies everywhere, but the seeds of tension are there. I could not but feel bad for them both of them because the ride ahead can’t help but be bumpy. Shall have to hope that this is one of those ‘doesn’t kill us but makes us stronger’ life events. (And in an aside….I miss the curls. The new look is great, but there was just something about those curls…)
Now, the king daddy of them all…the relationship between Booth and Brennan. In the beginning, it was a little tough seeing them functioning with a wall between them. I (slightly) raised an eyebrow at Booth’s overt neediness. But it was sweet in its own way. And given that he had been dealing with a distant Brennan over all of this time, understandable. However, I was relieved to see that familiar focused look come in his eyes while interrogating the killer.
Not to mention that Brennan seemed to have regressed. Worse than regressed, because even the need to bicker was lost. She was so matter of fact and distant in the beginning of the episode, I couldn’t help but wonder exactly how much ground we were going to have to cover with these two.
In the end though, it was clear that the wall was a necessary tool for the story. As each section of the wall was brought down, it provided a synopsis of their relationship. Was it the romantic tension summed up in the ‘iconic’ moment at the altar? Was it the potential conflict over the arrest of her fugitive father? Ah, it was Zach’s departure. Which fed right into the idea that he had helped her find the ‘big life’ outside of the lab. And in the end, I think, it brought them further along than they have been before.
Finally, the team as a whole has changed. Season 1, there was the definite line between the squints and Booth. The next season, it was obvious those lines were blurring. But in this episode, I really felt the line gone. Maybe it was the fact that they all were separated for awhile. Zach in Iraq. Brennan and Booth not working in the field together. Angela and Hodgins with their issues. But as the episode progressed, they were all brought back into the fold in different ways. And in the end, stronger I think, for having been apart. They still have their differences, but now, to borrow a phrase, they can work at their ‘full symbiotic potential’. With the usual bumps along the way, of course.
The Case
I will admit I raised an eyebrow when I heard that cannibalism was being revisited. However, any concerns were quickly erased as the story progressed. This could not have been any more different than The Man in the Bear. A little quirky, very bizarre…but in a way that perfectly suits the nature of the show. Layers and layers to this case in only the first episode. Starts with random body parts, moves to the potential for a jealous lover, to the hint of a ‘political’ scandal involving the head of the Secret Service, to an antisocial cannibal, to a conspiracy that has to put Hodgins on cloud nine. Almost too many layers really, but I say that with the understanding that all of that was necessary to serve as the foundation for the continuing story arc.
I do have to say, that the killer, Jason Harkness, was beyond creepy, but more than edged the line of being over the top. The comparisons of human flesh to pork, beef and chicken were enough, but comparing baby flesh to fish was a bit a too much even for a show willing to push the limits. And the snarling bite impression at the end? While I am sure it was intended to look fierce and scary, I actually found it almost comical. The blank face psychosis of Epps is far more horrifying.
The idea that this case will thread through the season is the most interesting point. It gives the show and characters a great deal of room to grow. Another serial killer to root against. A new set location if they continue to use the vault. And there are elements to the evidence and conspiracy that play to all of the squints individual strengths. Angela working with the artifacts. Hodgins with the conspiracy element in addition to the trace evidence. Cam with the ‘flesh’ aspects, Brennan and Zach with the bones.
It will definitely be interesting to see how far they will push (and balance) the elements of this case. There are lots of threads and angles at play right now that come along with all of the potential. That being said, if handled as it was in this episode, I think it will be a great trip for the viewers.
Highlights
Well, there are many that I could choose, but will settle for two. The return of Zach. The look on Brennan’s face when she saw him said volumes about what he and this team mean to her. And for me, seeing the team back together, just felt…..right. The way things are supposed to be.
The second highlight would have to be the end, of course. Yes, the ‘kiss’ against the hand was priceless. But the thing that got to me was the looks between Booth and Brennan during the conversation that solidified their role/relationship as the center of the team. On the surface the surface alone the words were meaningful, with an added subtext that moved these two forward in their relationship.
Both, I thought, were absolutely beautiful moments.
Overall Impression
This episode was a brilliantly blended exposition of what may have happened over the last three months and set-up for all of the ‘what ifs’ that our minds are always so eager to jump on. It was well-balanced in the way that it did not give away too much, left plenty of questions without answers to leave me eager to see what happens next, all while not leaving me scratching my head asking “what?”.
They have given the show much room to grow. Relationships, of course, which is what our Bones thrives on, though not simply Booth and Brennan. A quirky, bizarre, completely Bones-like case to serve as a thread throughout the season, that has the added bonus of playing to strengths of all the team members in significant ways.
So, to sum up? Fantastic way to start the season. Hooks are in….and I’m already asking how much longer until next Tuesday.

wow! both Ana and Willi's reviews hit it dead on for me. This season premiere was awesome in the character development, opened so many doors for the relationship of not only Booth/Brennan but also Hodgins/Angela, Cam/the team, Cam/Booth (as friends), and of course Zach/the rest of the team. It truly was worth the wait. and I cant wait for next week!!!!!!!
This is a wonderful idea girls, thanks!

Great reviews you two!
Am I the only person who didn't notice this green screen effect? In all sincerity during the first season I truly thought they shot the DC scenes IN DC! So the screeing effects don't bother me.
Someone else mentioned that the show seemed "off" but couldn't explain it. That was what I was thinking and then came up with some reasons.
Characters have changed appearances drastically, Jack, Zach and Angela but not as drastic in change as the guys. I thought that the premiere didn't flow from last season's finale like the other two premiere's did.
Tempe asking Cam what terms she should use so that Booth can understand - WTH?? I totally HATED that line especially after she said "A guh sound, guh guh". Booth is NOT an uneducated man and that line totally disrepected his character's intelligence in my opinion. Stupidest line from any character since the show began.
FOX allows a character to describe what eating a baby's face tastes like but won't allow the work ass on their meassage boards? OK. Moving on.
B&B were at their best at the end. Totally loved the hand on the cup scene. All I could think of was how many women (here) WOULD WANT to kiss/lick that hand.
